UV GEL TOPCOAT

Postby beth74 » Sat Jun 05, 2010 8:41 pm

Hello lovely ladies
Just a question, i was trained in gels as well as acrylics, but haven't done any gel since then.
My question is: Can you use a uv gel topcoat over polish on a natural nail (when doing a mani)
I am not having a lot of luck using my Out the door topcoat after applying two coats of polish,
the results don't seem to last? They chip and even sometimes smudge if i have done some nail art?
So, could i just apply uv gel top coat and cure? What sort of results would that produce? I know you can do it over acrylics,
just don't know over natural nails? How does it compare to a regular topcoat?
How long would it last and how hard would it be to remove when it comes to changing polish?
Hope you guys can help, you seem to able to answer all of my other questions :D
Thanx

Yes u can apply uv topcoat over a polish on natural nails.
I do it all the time.
The results are awesome, though on the odd occasion u may still get a little chipping if u don't seal the free edge properly. But it's only the top coat that chips.
To remove it, I just file the top coat lightly to remove, then remove polish as normal

I didnt think it was advised, due to the top coat cracking? I mix my polish in with Lish crystal clear at a 50/50 ratio and cure for 2 minutes, no chipping :D

I personally wouldn't use uv topcoat over nail polish, even if its just one client that it cracks and chips on, thats one unhappy client, for me thats one too many

Um................just a little confused atm :?
I am not sure what "crazes" on nail polish means? also what is heat set topcoat, i don't think i have heard of it?
When you say china glaze, do you mean their polishes and topcoat never chip or crack? That would be awesome!
I have heard a lot of good things about china glaze, i will have to try it!
just curious when you use gems etc for nail art, howdo you adhere them to the nail, when you a just doing a mani with polish and nail art?
Do you use glue or just set into the topcoat?
Tess, if you do try it - can you let me know the results please? :D
I need to find a way to set the polish completely before the client walks out the door, that doesn't take too long and if i can use it to set
the gems etc in, all the better!
What is it that you ladies do, when you do a mani, base coat, 2 coats of polish, topcoat and nail art - how long should it take to be dry enough
for the client to feel confident to walk out the door and not do any damage to their nails eg smudging etc?
Thanks for everyone's help!! :)

I have used a lot of different top coats that say they dry the quickest but the best one I have found that actually does dry completely in a couple of minutes is NSI Airshield, like the name suggests it is air drying (no heat needed) I do a lot of toe nail parties where lots of ladies get there toes done and I have to be quick, I put on a base coat, 2 coats of coloured polish let dry for a couple of minutes then apply art (transfer, diamonties etc.) to apply the diamonties I apply a little bit of base coat where I want them then go over the whole design with my Airshield topcoat and the whole thing is dry in a couple of minutes.
I have never used the UV topcoat on natural nails as it is not recommended, natural fingernails would have to be the hardest things to keep polish looking nice on which I guess is why things like the soak off gels are so popular.
Hope I haven't just confused you more! Lol :)

I use IBD topcoat, here is what it says on the net about it:

IBD UV Topcoat

UV Topcoat dries with any UV light for a super-durable finish.
It provides a long lasting, non-yellowing high shine.
UV Topcoat is designed for use over any polished or natural nails.
It can also be used over artificial nails.
Once cured under a UV light, UV Topcoat does not require cleansing.

I have been doing it for years and unless the client (or myself) is extremely rough with their nails, it doesn't chip.
It leaves a glass like coat that is hard and shiney. Very durable.
It last the full 2-3 weeks (if they come regularly for mani) and it needs to be buffed off.
I cure for 90 secs but it says on the instructions say 1 - 2 mins.

I have never been told otherwise that it can't be used on natural nails.
I have tried Dura Gloss (by PHD) but I find it's not a good topcoat.

It is very conflicting, i have actually done the IBD training and we were told never to use it on the natural nail or
over polish due to the fact that the natural nail and nail polish is flexible but the topcoat is not, therefore it cracks and crazes.
From past experience it has done just that, cracked.

Trial and error ..... give it a go, if it works for you, great :D if not, well you'll know not to do it again :P

I guess it's a client to client basis type thing perhaps?
I haven't had any real dramas with it over the past

There is always Shellac LOL
