HELP!! Thinking of doing nails from home..

Postby taiser » Fri Apr 02, 2010 1:01 pm

Hi, im thinking of doing nails from home, can anyone help me by telling me what avenues i have to go down to make this happen?
Ive worked in a salon doing nails, hair, beauty etc for almost 5 years, but am leaving in a few months and id really like to continue doing nails from home.
I have no idea if i have to register a business name, or what i have to do. Can someone please help?

Thanks!!!! any help will be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Depending on what state u live in you may need need to check regulations and what not at ur local council for working from home.
U will need a room/space with adequate ventilation or some from ventilation/filtration system.
Also u will need to make sure that u have adequate flooring, ie: no carpet to comply with OH&S regulations.

You can work under ur own name as a sole trader, but u will need to contact the tax department because depending on how much money ur bringing in it may only be classified as a hobby, therefore the tax side of things are different.

I forgot to mention, also u will need to sort out insurance, not only public liability but also personal insurance for ur home/contents.
First step would be to call ur insurance company and check ur current policy, sometimes these policies cover ur tools etc sometimes they dont :)

I went up to Balhannah a few weeks back, well I went through there on a scenic route to Mannum LOL

I am at the bottom of the hill In Reynella.

Well if we are under the same council, all u need to do is make sure ur not working on carpet, make sure ur have decent ventilation and if u want to dosplay a sign out the front u will need to get permission also but they are pretty good with that.

Thats fantastic news, because ive got wooden flooring and the nailtable will be next to a window (but im planning on investing in a table with an extractor anyway). As for the signage, i wont worry, my house is on a no through road a little out of the way, so nobody would see it anyway. :D :D Now just to look into insurance.

Ah k, well I would assume the rules wouldn't differ. But best to check all the same.
Good luck with it :)

U need to contact ur local council as each council is different in their dealings :)

Hey there Taiser,
Hope its all going ok for you since your last post :D

Jayde, im in coffs and the regulations dont differ all that much from S.A. regs...
If you contact your council they should send you out a registration form and a folder/booklet on skin penetration - yes even if your just doing nails!!
My councillor was quite up to date with everything and the flooring is a must, no carpet. Must have a basin for use, for example im in my garage and i have the laundry and toilet closed off from the salon and she was a bit iffy about the tub being used as a basin, but shes cool with it now. No cuticle nippers, salon grade disinfectant must be used. Categories cover sterilisation, disinfection, cleaning, waste, basic req. for premises, mobile operators and health and safety.

I'm in QLD and our council didn't want me to fill any forms in at all! As long as I meet the requirements (not more than 6 people per day, no carpet etc) they don't even want to know about me!
